The March meeting of Downe u3a was a bit different from the usual, with those attending learning about and seeing first hand the complicated process of dressing a lady in the 18th century.  Carrie Teggart, secretary of Downe u3a acted as model for local lady, Jane Kilpatrick, who is a font of knowledge on 18th century clothing.  The clothes she presented were all made by her, hand sewn over many hours work, much to the admiration of all.  At the meeting Jane acted as lady’s maid to dress Carrie  who started in her basic chemise and nightcap.  Jane then added all the different layers which went towards the dressing of an 18th century lady, the petticoat, stays, bum shaper, panier, stomacher, pocket, laces, ribbons, outdoor coat, hat and a lot of lace.  The u3a members were spell bound, even the men, both at the dressing process and the skills of Jane.
